Tools

Here are some of the tools that I'm happily doing my work with. Because they obey their master so well, I will post a little bit of each one of them here.

[Will add more soon, I promise]

Canon PowerShot S5 IS

This is my first digital camera. I bought it last year when my interest in photography grew beyond my ability to deny it :P . Besides, it's always better grabbing a piece of history, especially when you're not sure your memory will handle all the details for a long time.

It has already been to several rock concerts(1,2,3), a photography contest, some trips and much more...

I carry it with me a lot and it saves me from getting lost while wandering big cities. However, I did lose the camera once in a taxi, but I was lucky enough to get it back in exchange of a small motivational reward :) The camera was locked and had "Please call this number for reward[...]" written on the screen.

This year it will be the Eagle's Eye in my thesis project, since the Vision System relies on its sharp, bright frames and fast shooting capability. It will take scene snapshots upon request, all this thanks to Canon's SDK. If it does a good job, I will reward it with some new concerts this summer and probably a decent external flash.

A Helping Hand

Helping Hand

This is a tool that I sometimes use when soldering electronic components, and always use when desoldering. Actually I've only had to desolder something three times by now, hopefully I won't have to do it very often. The helping hand is quite helpful when flashing programs into the ASURO, since the computer's IR transceiver needs to be above ASURO and holding it in my hand while flashing 80-90 EPROM pages is simply not something to dream about.

Oh, and watch out for those crocodiles, they are mean, really mean...

Digital Multimeter

It saved me four times already and I have a feeling it will do so more in the future.

Whether it's a resistor's color markers gone wrong or faded, a short-circuit caused by faulty soldering or simply the fear of naughty voltages, this tool is your friend and you cannot deny it.

Dell XPS M1530

This is my new laptop, the second. Some of you know the tragic circumstances that its predecessor went away from our world. While the first one did have bad temper(ature) issues, the reasons it died were two HDDs failures plus one express courier mishandling while shipping for service. The result can also be called 'collection of insurance'. I used that insurance and some extra to buy Number Two . I decided not to bother being more creative with the name, they all grow up so fast and they leave you when you most need them.

Number Two is a very nice laptop (and many agree to that), both powerful and mobile enough to satisfy all my needs. A big plus I can add is the neat 1680x1050 resolution that makes any programmer that still has good eyes very happy. Number Two is black, it is in love with finger prints, dust and scratches, especially if you let it make friends with your electronics tools. Its temper is cooler than Number One's and I love it because it's always doing what I ask it to do without always protesting about something.

Number Two will play a major role in my thesis project this year, it will hold together all the hardware and software components I will use. Sometimes the stress is just too much for it, but I trust that everything will be fine.

It's also my developing machine, my airplane friend, my train companion and my personal entertainer.
I do have a real girlfriend, thank you.
